William "Smokey" Robinson Jr. is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and former record manager. Robinson is the founder and lead singer of Motown the Miracles, for which he is also a musician and lead producer. He led the group from its roots in 1955 as "The Five Chimes" until 1972 when he announced his retirement from the group to focus on Motown's role as vice president. However, Robinson returned to the music scene as a solo artist the following year. After selling Motown Records in 1988, Robinson left the company in 1990.
